We have all heard the ‘What’s in a Name’ famous quote, right? Well, since I started my blog, I’ve been questioned by so many people (including my family) about how I came up with the name Victori’s Creations. Well, grab a cup of coffee (or your preferred drink) and pull up a seat while I tell you the story of where the name Victori’s Creations came from.
The Story Behind Creations
The name Creations came to me several years ago when I was taking a speech class in college for my AA. I know, a speech class? Crazy, right? Well, one of our assignments was to write a how-to speech. At the time, I was crazy into knitting (something I learned while working as a CNA). So, I decided to do my speech on knitting. Part of the assignment was we had to also make or show what we were teaching in our how-to speech.
Well, I decided to make something for everyone in my class. I knitted all of the boys a football and knitted all of the girls a rabbit. It was awesome! Everyone really liked their “gifts” so much! So much so that I had a few people place an order for something. My teacher was one of them.
He wanted two rabbits and requested that they be specific colors. He wanted to match them with his kids’ college colors. When I gave them to him, he suggested I make a business out of knitting things for people. And so, Knitted Creations was born.
The Story Behind Victori
Where did the name Victori come from? To be honest, it’s a nickname my grandmother gave me when I was very little. I don’t know where she got the name and she is no longer with us for me to ask. As far back as I can remember, she would always call me Victori.
I really don’t remember her ever calling me by my first name, Vickie. And I have always been curious about why she called me Victori. I even thought that maybe my mom had thought about naming me Victoria and changed her mind before I was born. Meaning that Victori was just short for Victoria. That was not the case though. Mom always intended my name to be Vickie.
The older I became, the more I started really treasuring the name Victori. No one else ever called me by that name. Only my grandmother, making it an extra special name. So, I decided that I wanted to incorporate my special name into my business name. Thus, Victori’s Knitted Creations was born.
The Name Change
For several years, it was Victori’s Knitted Creations, because I had stepped away from crocheting completely. I knitted all kinds of things like dish cloths, rabbits, topsy turvy dolls, blankets, and hats. I absolutely loved knitting. To the point that I didn’t think I would ever crochet again.
Or so I thought. Then one day, a few years ago, I came across graphghans. I tried it out, and BAM! just like that, I’m crocheting again. But I’m only making graphghans. Not that I’m complaining, mind you. And I wasn’t ready to give up on knitting just yet. Which meant I had to change the name of my business. Thus, Victori’s Yarn Creations was born.
Honoring my grandmother
As you probably already know, about three or four years ago, my husband bought me a Cricut Explore Air (the first one). I used it a couple of times and then it just sat there for a couple of years. Then, I decided about a year ago to start using it again after seeing all of the cool things people were making with theirs.
I actually come from a very creative family, so I’ve dabbled in a lot of things. The Cricut was just the newest thing. I realized that crocheting and knitting were not going to be the only creations I was going to dip my hands in. I’ve created jewelry, done cross stitching, created things out of plastic canvas, and so much more.
It was time for my business name to change again. Only, I wanted this to be the last time I changed it. Especially since I was planning to have a blog to go with it. I can’t keep changing my name. But I didn’t want to take Victori out of the name. To me, I’m kind of honoring my grandmother by keeping the name Victori in my business name.
HOW IT BECAME VICTORI’S CREATIONS
After really over thinking the name of my business, I finally decided that all I really needed to do was to get rid of the middleman, so to speak. I didn’t need to be specific about what the creations are since I may be creating so many different things. Right now, most of my blog is about crocheting, but that doesn’t mean that I won’t add other crafts to it.
So, I just took out the descriptor and kept it simple. Victori’s Creations sums up the many different crafts that I love doing and I won’t have to change the name again. Therefore, in honor of my grandmother and my love of creating, my business name has become and will always be Victori’s Creations.
In honor of my story of ‘What’s in a Name,’ I have created a throw blanket pattern. The What’s in a Name chart pattern is available in The Vault. You can gain access to the Vault by subscribing (free!) to my newsletter below!
