Learn How To Easily Create Home Decor
Chalkboard has become a beautiful addition to home decor as of late. There are just so many ways to beautify chalkboards to get that farmhouse or shabby chic look you want in your home. What’s better is that Dollar Tree now sells chalkboard signs that are super cute!
Of course, you know I had to hop down to my local Dollar Tree and get me some signs and then break out my Cricut. I originally wanted to use white vinyl on the chalkboard signs, because…well, it’s a chalkboard, but I didn’t have any. So, I used holographic instead and it turned out better than I could have ever hoped.

How to Create Chalkboard Sign Home Decor Using Dollar Tree Supplies
Step 1: Get My Free Chalkboard Home Decor Sign Files
To get the design, go to Victori’s Creations’ Vault. Enter the password to access The Vault (the password can be found in each email I send out). Look for design #014 – Chalkboard Sign SVG file and download it to your device.
Step 2: Prep Your Design
Once downloaded to your device, you will be able to upload the files into Design Space. Once the files are uploaded, you’ll need to resize them to fit into your area. If you are using the rectangle chalkboard sign, your measurements will be 4 inches in heighth and 7 inches in width. You don’t want your words to go from edge to edge though, so make your sign 6 ½ inches wide and 3 ½ inches tall.
To create your own words in Design Space, click on the ‘T’ in the left column. Then type out the word or phrase you want to use and select the font that you like. Make sure you don’t have thin spots in your font. If you do, it might not cut or weed well. Last, change the size of your word or phrase to match your sign.
Step 3: Cut Your Design Out
Now that you have prepped your designs, click ‘Make it’. You will want to select the material you are using and your cut pressure. I always use the more option. Now it’s time to check your blade to make sure it is free of any debris. Add you vinyl to your standard grip mat with the shiny or colored side up. Finally, you will add your mat to your cutting machine and click load. Once it has loaded, press the go button.
Step 4: Weed Your Vinyl
It is time to remove all of the excess vinyl from your words. I like to start on the small areas inside of the letters, then move to the bigger pieces outside of the letters. Be careful when removing the vinyl, because it can tear easily. I also like to use a pair of scissors to cut any big pieces as I go to help keep it manageable.
Step 5: Apply the Design to Your Chalkboard Home Decor Sign
The first thing you want to do is wipe down your chalkboard signs. You don’t want anything to get trapped under your vinyl. Next, lay your transfer tape over your design. Use your scraper tool to help the vinyl stick to your transfer tape. Slowly remove the transfer take with the vinyl away from the vinyl backing.
Center your design on your chalkboard sign. Because the transfer tape is clear, you will be able to see exactly how you want it to appear on your sign. Carefully lay your design where you want it and use your scraper to help adhere it to your chalkboard. Next, take a top corner of the transfer tape and slowly peel it down until your design is off of the transfer tape and securely on your sign.
Optional Step: Add Beads to the Hanger
This last step is optional. You can choose to leave the hanger as it is or you can add beads and give your home decor sign a little more pazzazz. Make sure that if you choose to add the beads, don’t cut the hanger. You can remove one side by lining it up and simply pulling it through the hole. You can reattach it the same way.
