When you have kids or grandkids, you are always wanting to make them the cutest things. Well, at least I do. I am always trying to create cute things for my grand-babies. We’re supposed to spoil them, right? I thought so too. So, I decided to make them cute personalized night lights with fairies and unicorns.

Seeing In the Dark
So, about a year ago, our local Micheals closed down and held a sale to get rid of their inventory. Of course, I was sad to see them shut down, but I didn’t pass up the opportunity to get some really good deals. And, if I’m being honest, I was there four out of the five days of their closing sale. On my third visit, I noticed some of those glass blocks (the short long ones) and decided to grab a couple of them.
Needless to say, I got them and forgot about them. A few months ago, I cleaned up my office and found them again. So, I’ve been waiting a little bit to get this project going. Plus, it took me a little bit to get the font and designs that I wanted to really make these personalized night lights really pop. I think I understood the assignment!

How to make personalized night lights out of glass blocks
Gotta Get Whatcha Need
The supply list for this project is very simple. Although, you don’t want to wait for a craft store to go out of business (we don’t like it when that happens), you can always look for sales. Hobby Lobby is always having a sale on something or another. So, just keep an eye out for their sales, or you could get all of your supplies from Amazon.
For this project, you are going to need a cutting machine. I used the Cricut Explore Air 2 with the green standard grip mat and weeding tools. The rectangle glass block. Any brand will do, just be mindful of the measurements, as you may have to adjust the template some. Fairy lights too! I used the small ones but the longer ones will probably work best! I used the holographic shimmer and Cricut’s transfer paper. You will also need something to clean the glass block. I used sanitizing wipes to clean mine.
Getting the Design
My free Glass Block Template with Bonus Fairies SVG cut files are waiting for you in my free resource library. Get the free glass block template (Design #006) from The Vault (get the password to The Vault in the form at the bottom of this post).
Preparing Your Design for the Cut
Now that you have the design, upload it into Design Space (or the program that you are using). These designs are sized to fit the 4 x 8-inch glass blocks. If you feel as though the measurements are off, you can easily adjust them. Next, choose which fairy you want to use for your personalized night lights and place it on the template. Make sure to change the alignment so that the fairy is in front of the template.
Now you will want to add your text. It can’t be a personalized night light without the text, right? Choose the font you want to use. I used the Miss Arrow font. Now, align the text inside of the inner box. You can align the text any way you want: center, right, left, top, bottom, and even have it slanted. The possibilities are endless really.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE: Make sure you hide the two boxes in the template and attach the text and the fairy. You will want to attach them so they cut out exactly how you want to lay it on the glass block. Because you are putting the name and fairy on the front of the block, you do NOT mirror anything.
Now it is time to put your vinyl on your standard grip mat and let your Cricut cut your design out.
Putting It All Together
Once cut, weed the vinyl around the design using a weeding tool. If you are using the recommended vinyl, you will be able to weed using your fingers. Remember to be careful so you don’t rip the design. Place your transfer tape over the design as soon as you get all of the extra vinyl off.
Wipe down the glass block before you put your vinyl on the glass. Make sure it is free from anything that could get stuck under the vinyl. Line the design up with where you want it to appear on the glass block, then place the vinyl on the smooth surface of the block. Use your scraper to make sure your design is adhering to the block before you peel the transfer tape away from the design.
Start at the upper right-hand corner of the transfer tape and slowly peel it back until the design has been separated from the transfer sheet. Now place your fairy lights inside the glass block. You will have to play around with them for a bit to get them where you want them. And add batteries.
